»Not Gonna Go Hungry»: McDavid speaks on salary discount and belief in Oilers to win Stanley Cup
Multiple times, McDavid stressed that he's in a unique situation to ruthlessly pursue the Stanley Cup. The Oilers don't have the best future outlook, but their current core is right on the cusp of winning. So the Captain felt it was best to stay short-term, with a big discount to help the team aggressively add new players.
McDavid's also already secured over $100M in career earnings by the age of 28. He joked that his salary discount isn't much of a sacrifice anyway.
It's a unique situation. We knew we weren't going to sign a long term deal. So two years ago that number makes a lot of sense. Gives us a chance to extend our window here in Edmonton.
Lenny's not going to go hungry with that money. We'll be fine. It's about winning, that's always what I've preached. So, I think this deal gives both sides what they're looking for.
McDavid also spoke about the importance of the front office building the team around him in the next 3 years he's under contract.
He recognized the efforts to add some younger players with potential, but now has also given the team cap room to add established stars.
There's no secret that with a team that pushes for it every year like we have We've given up first round picks, prospects, and all that stuff, not a ton of young guys.
So I think 2 years gives us a chance to play this out, gives us every opportunity to build something here. Our heart's here. We want to win here. That's the bottom line, and I think that deal expresses that.
It's an incredibly display to see the Captain and best player in the NHL so dialled in on the singular goal of winning to the point he would forego salary and is deeply engaged in talks with the General Manager on their assets.
McDavid is ultra-committed to bringing success to Edmonton, and this contract shows exactly that.
