Several updates are circulating regarding Connor McDavid's expiring contract, more specifically that the Oilers' superstar will remain with the Oilers by way of an extension.
Though the term and value of the potential contract have not been revealed by either the Oilers or McDavid, it is a near-certainty that McDavid will be an Oiler for the foreseeable future, according to a social media post from analyst Frank Seravalli.
This news, which has Edmonton fans celebrating, and breathing a sigh of relief, has Toronto Maple Leafs' fans feeling disappointed. Ever since the end of the 2024-25 season, rumors have circulated that suggest Connor McDavid would sign with Toronto.
That Connor has not publicly spoken on the subject of where and when he will sign, only gives weight to the possibility of the Oilers' Captain exchanging his Oilers jersey for a Leafs' jersey.
The idea alone of McDavid playing with Auston Matthews - a formidable a duo as there ever was - has Toronto fans imagining a Stanley Cup parade down Bay Street, where there hasn't been one since 1967, when the Leafs last won a Cup.
Connor would certainly be the missing piece to a Leafs' team that has struggled advancing in the playoffs since 2016, Matthews' draft year. Now that Mitch Marner is playing in Vegas, the logistics could work, however.
Connor McDavid's existing contract expires July 1st, 2026. When he does finally sign, he will become the highest paid NHLer, a distinction that now goes to Leon Draisaitl, with an AAV of $14M. McDavid's will be in the neighborhood of $17M to $19M, though it could potentially be $15M, if he signs for 8-years, or even $20M if he signs a 3-year extension only.
Whatever the amount and term of McDavid's new contract, Leafs' fans will not be happy. The Leafs' organization, in fact, have been keeping close tabs on the Oilers' process, though not much has been confirmed. Making cap space in the eventuality that Connor does decide to head East, has been a Leafs' priority this offseason.
