Insider says how far the Oilers would go to match offer sheet on Broberg

Edmonton needs to decide how much they're willing to spend to prevent an offer sheet for Broberg to remain in Edmonton.

Broberg has had a relatively slow development for the Oilers, but has been really impressive in his showings in this year's playoffs. The Oilers are looking to lock Broberg up, but other teams have taken notice to how well he is starting to progress.

Seravalli brings up a great point that at this stage, another team may offer Broberg a substantial deal that could be tough for the Oilers to match with their current cap situation.

Despite this, it sounds like the Oilers are willing to spend a decent amount of money to retain Broberg. They'll move money out to try and keep Broberg on the team and may end up dumping Ceci, Kane or even both. If a team does offer sheet him, Jeff Jackson will have his work cut out for him to try and keep Broberg.

Broberg took a massive step forward in the playoffs, with very defensively responsible play and some offensive contribution as well. The Oilers have really liked what they've seen from him and aren't happy with the second round draft pick compensation they'd receive if they let him get offer sheeted by another team.

It would be great for the Oilers to keep him, as he is going to play a big role in next year's defense core. Broberg should play the second pairing right side next season, where their best backup option would be Cody Ceci. They also wouldn't gain any cap space if they lost him, so it wouldn't even be a situation where they could use that money to trade for an impactful defenseman. It's a great thing Jeff Jackson and the Oilers organization see what a steal Broberg could become and how vital he will be to the franchise going forward.
