Jake Walman has been a fantastic fit and player for the Edmonton Oilers in his first couple games, and the team may be looking to lock him down as a long term piece on their blue line.
Edmonton Oilers want to keep Jake Walman long term in their group
Oilers insider Bob Stauffer suggested in a new report that management sees Walman as a long piece on their blue line. Walman is eligible to sign a contract extension this offseason, and the Oilers will likely pursue that.
Would not surprise me if he is part of the long-term solution as a top-4 D in Edmonton. Worth the draft capital moved in the deal IMO.
Walman is under contract for this season and next at a very manageable price tag of $3.4M. He could demand a fair raise on his next contract, but with the rising salary cap, the Oilers may be smart to move as fast as possible with an extension. It would be a bold move for the Oilers to sign him if he has a great playoffs with the team and increases his value.
Jake Walman appears to be great fit with Edmonton Oilers defence
Walman has only played two games with the Oilers so far, but his two-way game is impressing fans and management alike. He brings a physical presence, solid defensive play, and the ability to make a great breakout pass.
By most advanced metrics, Walman has been a very underrated defenceman through his NHL career. If he's able to continue this strong play with the Oilers, especially in the playoffs, locking him up long term looks like a great idea.
What's even more encouraging for Edmonton is that Walman and Ekholm haven't been in the lineup at the same time yet. Their defence group will be incredibly strong this season, and the addition of Walman will be a massive reason why.
