Gretzky shares heartwarming story about his Father during last NHL game

Former NHL legend Wayne Gretzky sat down with TNT and shared a great story about his final hours as an NHL player which involved his father.

Gretzky explained how in 1999 he decided to hang up his skates and that the last few days of his career was a constant celebration by the New York Rangers, NHL fans and other players within the league about the fantastic career he had.

The story came full circle as he explained that he drove his father to the rink on the final day when in the early days of playing hockey his father would drive him to the rink to begin their lessons or to play with other kids. His father joked with him that he felt that he had one more year to play the game he loved, however, Gretzky told him that he was finished as a player.

The stats line for this legend are off the charts has he played 1487 games, scored 894 goals with 1963 assists for 2857 points and was a + 520. With his career spanning from 1979 through 1999 he helped grow the game in many parts of North America including the southwestern part of the United States with the Los Angeles Kings.

Gretzky won four Stanley cups all with the Edmonton Oilers and was an icon for the game and the Oilers. He still holds records for the most regular season goals, assists, points, and hat tricks which sit at 50.

Gretzky is now a regular on TNT as he is a contributor helping to continue to grow the game with his explanations, stories of his career and what he thinks about new players coming into the NHL.
