Rugged Oilers' prospect Maxim Beryozkin has opted to play another year of pro-hockey in the KHL with the Yaroslavl Locomotiv, instead of the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.

In fact, the Edmonton Oilers had contacted the big Russian winger's representation to sign an NHL contract, but declined, preferring to remain in the KHL, where believed his development would benefit more.
Winger Maxin Bereyozkin speaks with Russian media outlet about his reasons for not coming to North America
«I was invited to join the team,» Beryozkin revealed during an interview. «We had conversations [with the Oilers], some discussions, but I didn't give them a clear answer. I decided to stay, and I'm sure that this is only a plus for my development...He [Maxim's KHL coach] thought it was too early for me to go to the NHL. I took that into account and decided to stay another year so as not to play in the AHL.»
From Maxim's point of view, the decision to remain with Locomotiv was a mature decision to make. Most young players would have jumped at the opportunity to sign an NHL contract, and get one step closer to playing with McDavid and Draisaitl.
In 66GP last season in the KHL, Maxim Beryozkin scored 15G and 42 points, landed 63 hits, and fired 143 shots on net, numbers that clearly show his ability to play an all-around, rugged game. The 6'4", 211lbs winger also scored 14 points in 21 playoff games.
Though Maxim preferred to develop another year in Russia, it should not be mistaken for reluctance. In fact, it suggests great patience and prudence for such a young player. When he finally does sign with the Oilers, he'll be ready to make an impact.
"My dream is to play in the NHL, against all these stars I have watched my whole life."

Was Maxim Beryozkin's decision to develop in the KHL instead of the AHL a good idea, or bad?
