On an episode of Better Lait Than Never Podcast the hosts spoke about their belief that the Edmonton Oilers are 'all in' this year, and are well-suited to make another push for the Stanley Cup.
"The Oilers are right there and they're gonna be able to add.
Obviously, the Oilers don't have much cap space, or any cap space. I'm excited to see how he [GM Stan Bowman] does it. The Oilers are all in. They are going to be trading draft picks."
Since 2020, Oilers have been trade-deadline buyers
The Oilers have qualified for the post-season since 2020, winning two Western Conference Finals, and reaching the Stanley Cup Finals the last two campaigns.
To accomplish this, Edmonton has bolstered its rosters at the trade-deadline, dealing draft capital and picks in order to do so; it's the inevitable consequence of icing a perennial contender. This year will be no different, with the potential positions in question being another top-6 winger and a starting goalie.
Of course, Edmonton doesn't have any top-prospects to entice other teams at the trade market (they won't trade Howard or Savoie), and its bottom-end players won't attract too many buyers.
Oilers must again rely on trading draft picks for post-season help
.According to PuckPedia the Oilers hold several picks in the later rounds of the 2026, 2027 and 2028, and first-round picks in 2027 and 2028.
This allows them some flexibility in pursuing trades at this year's trade-deadline.
On Thursday, Daily Faceoff's Matt Larkin wrote about how the Oilers should spend its cap money as it cap continues to rise over the next couple of years:
One that comes to mind is the Nashville Predators'
Filip Forsberg. Who has four seasons remaining on his deal from 2026-27 onward... He does have a no-movement clause and would be moving away from a no-tax market, but perhaps the trade would be worth it if Forsberg simply wants to chase a championship.
Jacob Markstrom, who has lots of experience playing in Western Canada as a former Vancouver Canuck and Calgary Flame.
Frederik Andersen, who has his own big-game shortcomings but would still be an upgradeIf the Oilers want to rectify the problem via the trade market, the New York Islanders'
Ilya Sorokin should top the wish list.
