The hockey world is mourning the tragic passing of former Oilers first round draft pick, Scott Metcalfe, at 58 years old.
NHL and Edmonton Oilers mourn the loss of former first round pick Scott Metcalfe
The NHL alumni association made the official announcement of Metcalfe's passing earlier this week, losing him far too soon at only 58.
Unfortunately, Metcalfe only went on to play 2 games with the
Edmonton Oilers in the 1987-88 season, before being traded to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for
Steve Dykstra.
Oilers analyst Bruce Curlock was personally touched by Metcalfe's passing, and reminisced that he hoped he would've become a Top 6 forward. Although Metcalfe's NHL career ended with only 19 games, he still touched many fans and people within the game.
Metcalfe went on to have an incredible overseas and AHL career instead, playing until he was 35 years old in the UHL.
He was a tough player and offensive producer wherever he went in his playing career. In just 3 AHL seasons between 1988-1991, Metcalfe scored 119 points with 511 penalty minutes in just 172 games. That's a legendary run in any league.
Some fans even remembered Metcalfe for the 46 games he played in the British Hockey League in 2001, considered the greatest team to exist in league history.
It's absolutely tragic to hear of Metcalfe's passing. We here at OilersDaily join the hockey world in extending our most sincere condolences.
