Edmonton Oilers linked to former superstar Jonathan Toews in trade

The Oilers have been searching for a solution to their third line all season with different line combinations, making it increasingly obvious that it will need to be addressed in trade.

NHL insider Jeff Marek suggested that the Oilers should consider Jonathan Toews as their solution to the third line centre. With the Winnipeg Jets falling in the standings, they'll likely accommodate the veteran and send him to any contending team of his choice.

Not only that, but he's expected to cost next to nothing in a trade cost.

Now 37 years old, Toews was once a superstar player in the NHL and the first line centre that led Stan Bowman's Chicago Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups. However, he's just not the same player he was all those years ago.

Toews has improved as the season has gone on, but he's not an impact player anymore. Owed $2M in salary this year with significant bonuses that will apply next year, there's major risk in trading for this player.

He's up to 19 points in 50 games this season, but the underlying numbers look very poor for Toews this season. If your feature skill is faceoffs, there are simply other better players available - at a cheaper salary too.

While he is a big name with connections to the Oilers, Edmonton should search for a better solution to the third line centre.
