Top NHL insider reveals top Oilers trade target after scouting meetings
The Edmonton Oilers are currently holding their annual pre-trade deadline scouting meetings, and the team has reportedly agreed on the need to add a top-9 forward.
The Oilers have been connected to a number of third line fixtures in trade to help their upcoming playoff run, most recently including Jonathan Toews of the Winnipeg Jets. Now based on new reports, they will be shifting their focus to top 9 forwards.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reveals Oilers scouting meetings agreed on need for top 9 forward
NHL insider Pierre LeBrun recently reported that the Oilers have held their pro-scouting meetings ahead of the trade deadline and are zeroing in on top-9 forwards.
Elliotte Friedman confirmed these reports today, revealing that the Oilers will be looking for a proven bottom-six player or someone willing to accept that role.
Friedman's comments of 'willing to accept' a bottom-six role is interesting, as it suggests they could target a higher-end player to anchor their third line.
Building strong centre depth down the middle is key to winning a Stanley Cup and being able to roll out a deep lineup - and adding an impact player there could make a huge difference for the Oilers.
One player linked to the Oilers in trade talks who would fit this bill is Predators centreman Ryan O'Reilly. A player with experience in the top-6 and in the Stanley Cup playoffs, he would be an incredible addition to the third line.
We'll see if the Oilers can make creative enough moves to bolster their lineup significantly in a must-win season. Trading for a top-six player to anchor their third line would absolutely be useful.
