Analysts are calling out Corey Perry for leaving the Edmonton Oilers purely to chase a higher salary, instead of trying to win a Stanley Cup.
The Oilers were clearly hoping to bring Perry back after he settled into an effective veteran role with the team, but after signing in Los Angeles for a total of $4M including bonuses - and it's clear why Edmonton didn't match it.
Corey Perry called out for leaving Oilers to chase higher salary instead of Stanley Cup
Analysts at OilersNation are now calling out the discrepancy between Perry's words and his final decision. Perry said he's looking to win a Stanley Cup, but left a team on the cusp to get the highest salary on the market.
As soon as it came out how much money it was - not even thinking twice about it. Thumbs up, thanks for your service.
We're not the ones with the money in front of us, but I just look at a guy that has $100M in career earnings. It's like, was it really all about 'I want to win the Stanley Cup', would you sign back in Edmonton for a million bucks.
Now 40 years old, Perry's clearly made his money in his NHL career with $100M. Usually by that point, money's not the biggest factor anymore in a contract decision - mostly about an environment to win and for family.
After quality seasons in Edmonton late in his career, and especially after losing 5 of 6 Stanley Cup Finals, it's surprising to see Perry chase the biggest pay check instead of the best chance to win another Cup.
The Oilers may be better off without him this year as it's unlikely he'd score 19 goals again, but it still stings to see Perry leave - especially for Los Angeles.
