Last night's historic game between the Oilers and Capitals will be remembered for its many goals and record-setting performances, and for an inadvertent kick in the groin.
Caps' fans call-out McDavid for dirty play
The video has circulated widely online, despite there not being a penalty call and Wilson eventually resuming play.
Still, the post-game comments were understandably varied, with Caps' fans saying McDavid meant to kick Tom Wilson between the legs, and Oilers' fans insisting the former accidentally lost his balance and kicked back as he was being repeatedly crosschecked.
Whatever the reason, given McDavid and Wilson are Team Canada teammates, the incident is taking some of the attention away from a game that will go down as one the best for some of the players involved.
It was an historic performance for Edmonton's Evan Bouchard, who is now only the fourth defenseman in NHL history to factor in all of his team's six goals, and only the second ever to record six-points on just eight shots - the other is Bobby Orr.
And though McDavid did get involved in the Wilson scrum, it was his intensity in the game that put him there in the first place; his willingness to drive to the net, resulting in a 2G and 3A night, including the OT winner.
McDavid was simply dominant, in all areas of the ice. He now has 32G and 90 points over 53 games this season, leading the league in points and assists. He is currently scoring 1.70 points-per-game.
With a few more of these multi-point games, the Oilers' superstar could conceivably surpass his career best 153 points from 2022-23 and 100 assists from 2023-24.
McDavid's career high in goals is 64, which he also recorded in 2022-23.
In the 25-games played since December 1, Connor has recorded 23G, 36A for 59 points. 29 games remain on the schedule. He's on pace to beat all three.
