The Edmonton Oilers have clinched their sport in a Stanley Cup Final rematch vs the Florida Panthers, and this year, McDavid and the Oilers felt confident enough to touch the Conference Final Trophy.

To touch the trophy or not has been a long held NHL superstition, and the Oilers have been one of the most superstitious teams in hockey. Tonight though, they showed a new level of confidence.

Connor McDavid breaks expectations after clinching Stanley Cup Final

Connor McDavid and the Oilers chose not to touch the trophy last year, and many expected them not to tough it again this year. Then, McDavid showed off that the Oilers don't care about these superstitions anymore - it's only up to them.
McDavid himself is personally superstitious, keeping an old pair of skates and other equipment through his career and never touching the trophy in the past. Analysts saw it as a big break from tradition for McDavid.
After the game, McDavid said one of the biggest differences of this season was that the Oilers were far less emotional. They were team laser focused on one goal all season - that couldn't be achieved in the regular season.
Come playoff time, the Oilers erased all doubts of their roster. Heading into the postseason with questionable goaltending, health, and depth - every concern faded away after the first two games as every player stepped up to play their role. It's been a professional playoffs from a seasoned team.
Not caring about the superstitions of the past, the Oilers are now in control of their own destiny - and the rematch in the Cup Final is the only thing in their way.
