At 37 years old, Derek Ryan has endeared himself to Oilers fans as a reliable veteran fourth line center. After going undrafted and making his NHL debut at 29 years old, Ryan's put together an incredible career of 545 games with the Hurricanes, Flames, and for the last three seasons, the Oilers. With his career and at his age, it's likely Ryan will retire soon, and now his family has issued a statement.

Derek's wife Bonnie Ryan revealed in a recent Instagram post that he plans to take his playing career year-by-year at this moment, but the Ryan family would like him to retire as an Oiler.

Bonnie Ryan cited the family's love of the city and the team as reasons to stay in Edmonton until he does decide on retirement.

Hopefully, the Edmonton Oilers are able to win a cup while Ryan is still with the team, as he absolutely deserves it as a fantastic hockey success story. At 37 years old Ryan likely doesn't have too many years left in him, and if the Oilers win the cup this year - it's very possible that Ryan could decide to retire on top.
