Emerging Oilers prospect takes step toward leaving organization
The Edmonton Oilers received news that one of their prospects Dalyn Wakely has decided to leave the organization and commit fully to the University of Massachusetts Lowell next season.
The 21-year-old centre had been playing for the North Bay Battalion for four seasons and spent one year with the Barrie Colts before making his decision to going to the NCAA.
Wakely provides an element many teams would like
Standing at 6 foot 1 and 198 lbs, Wakely is considered a physical forward and a two way forward which is what the Oilers are looking for.
Every team needs players like Wakely. He battles for pucks mercilessly, takes hits to make plays, and dishes out even more punishment than he takes. Around the net, he digs for pucks and creates space for his teammates by engaging as many defenders as possible. Along the boards, he throws reverse hits, rolls with contact, and attacks the middle.
- EliteProspects 2024 NHL Draft Guide
His best season in the Ontario Hockey League was in 2023-2024 with the North Bay battalion as he had played 66 games, scored 39 goals with 65 assists for 104 points along with 71 penalty minutes and was a + 54.
Oilers will have a quiet upcoming draft this summer
General manager Stan Bowman had made the decision to offload several of his draft picks for 2025 as the team believed they were heading for another Stanley Cup finals.
With this being the case, the strategy paid off but means their 2025 draft will be fairly quiet as they only hold three draft picks.
Possessing their 3rd, 6th and 7th, the team would need to make several trades during the summer including at the draft or after unrestricted free agency begins.
But no matter the case, the Oilers are in the Stanley Cup finals again with a good chance of winning their 6th Stanley Cup in their history.
