In April of 2018, the hockey world suffered an incredibly tragedy when the team bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos of the SJHL was struck by a truck, causing the death of 16 people, most of them players.
The semi-truck driver who struck the bus was found to be at fault for the accident, as the driver failed to yield at a road sign and was speeding. Now 5 years later, the final punishment may be coming to the truck driver who caused the crash.
Jaskirat Singh Sidu was sentenced to eight years in prison after initially pleading guilty in 2019, but was released on parole earlier this year. Upon his release from prison however, the Canadian Border Service Agency recommended he be deported to his home country of India, a sentiment that was backed by the families of the victims.
Recently, a judge ruling on Sidhu's case upheld the Border Service Agency's report, and supported his deportation to India. Hopefully with this action, the families of the victims will have some closure to this horrible tragedy after so many years.
