Dreger mentioned that Flames general manager Craig Conroy has been on the hunt for a new second line center as the Flames continue their retool. It's clear that he is looking for an established player who will give the Flames many years of service and be an impactful player for their offense.
Several names have been mentioned but one appears to be growing in strength which is Anaheim Ducks center Trevor Zegras.
Zegras has been looking for a new home for the past couple of years and it appears that general manager Pat Verbeek is still quite interested in moving younger players for more established veterans.
The 23-year-old who was drafted by the Ducks in 2019, first round, nine pick overall as played 21 games, scoring four goals with six assists for 10 points and is a - 3.
Conroy's plan is keen to trading older veterans out of the Flames and bringing in younger players which had stirred more rumors that veteran center Nazem Kadri maybe on the move to his former team the Toronto Maple Leafs
Retired NHL executive Doug McClean explained that he can confirm that the Maple Leafs have kicked some tires to acquire Kadri from the Flames. The Maple Leafs are looking to improve their depth down the middle after losing several players to long term injury including winger Calle Jarnkrok center David Kampf.
Reacquiring Kadri would take some creative thinking in terms of cap hit and what the cost may be in terms of players or prospects, but he would certainly give the Maple Leafs more sandpaper and more grit as he did when he was there the first time.
It's safe to say the Flames will remain in flux as the team continues to do well in the standings but at the same time feels more changes are necessary and it's likely the Oilers will need to keep their eyes on their rival.
