CapFriendly has been the gold standard in publicly available data regarding the NHL's salary cap. It provides each players' salaries, terms, bonuses, movement clauses, and more. Now that the Capitals have purchased it, CapFriendly will soon no longer be publicly available for NHL fans.
Not only do NHL fans use CapFriendly as a source for critical information, but NHL front offices use it too. Now that the Capitals have purchased the website, other team received a notice stating that their agreements will be terminated. It seems that the Capitals alone will now be the only ones with access to CapFriendly.
Thankfully, the official sale of the website will be finalized after the Draft and Free Agency, still allowing teams, fans, and media to find a viable alternative after the busiest time of the year.
It will be tough to see CapFriendly effectively be out of commission forever now. Since its creation in 2015 and the salary cap's growing dominance of the sport, it's been a resource for many to better understand the behind the scenes aspects of the NHL.
