Connor McDavid looked like he was shot out of a cannon in Team Canada’s first game, making an impact on the scoresheet and with his physicality.
Everyone was expecting McDavid to bring his best for the Olympics, especially after his emotional open letter to hockey fans. Him scoring 3 points is no surprise, but his massive hit to set the tone was.

In his first shift of the game, McDavid came out flying and delivered one of the biggest hits in his career. He came flying down the boards, and drilled Czech defenceman Lukas Sedlak.
To have the team’s star player this engaged in the physical game from the first shift of the tournament is a sign of what’s to come for McDavid. He’s treating every game like it’s Game 7 of the Cup Final, which is a nightmare for every opponent.
This kind of blend of skill, speed, and physicality is the identity of Canadian hockey.
Still, it was surprising to see hockey’s most talented player start the first game of the tournament with a massive hit. Teammate Brad Marchand revealed he commended Tom Wilson for the hit after the shift, only for Wilson to have to say “That was Connor.”
McDavid is dialling up his play to new levels in a relentless pursuit of a gold medal. As the Oilers’ captain said in his open letter, he just wants to win something again. As the tournament goes on closer to the final game, he’ll get even better, and maybe lay some more huge hits.
