Oilers restricted free agent getting interest for offer sheet, says insider

The Edmonton Oilers are still over the salary cap and need to sign restricted free agents Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg, and now they may be attracting interest for an offer sheet.

On the Daily Faceoff podcast recently, Frank Seravalli said the Oilers could be vulnerable to an offer sheet they won't be able to match.

If I were another team, I'd be trying to offer sheet Philip Broberg. I'd give him six years times $4.5-million bucks You get a young defenceman who already let you know he was unhappy with his opportunity. (He) made the case in the playoffs that he should've been playing all year with the way that he played, now is an important part of your team moving forward and they don't have the ability to keep him if they get an offer sheet. There's really no chance to even match that.

Broberg requested a trade at the beginning of last season as he felt blocked by the organization's depth at defence. He eventually broke into the lineup in the playoffs and proved he's developed into a serviceable young defenceman, and he could get even better.

Rival NHL scouts are reportedly raving about Broberg, and if they would take a risk to invest $4.5M into him over term, the Oilers wouldn't have the cap space to match the offer. The team would only get a second round pick as compensation. For a player that some teams believe could be a top pair defenceman, that would be a fantastic contract.

Jeff Jackson and the Oilers will want this business taken care of in relatively short order, so a move must be coming to clear salary cap space. The most likely reported move would be trading Brett Kulak or Cody Ceci off the roster, or perhaps placing Kane on LTIR for the year for a surgery. Whatever route the Oilers take, they might need to act soon if another team does prepare an offer sheet for Broberg.
