The NHL salary cap has been a very imperfect mechanism that affects every aspect of the league, and finally there will soon be some relief and modifications made.

Reports surfaced earlier this season that the NHL's salary cap was set to take a major jump in the next few seasons. Next season will see a $6.7M increase to a total of $95.5M, and much more in years to come.

NHL salary cap may increase even more than initially thought, changes coming to playoff loophole

Elliotte Friedman's initial estimations have the NHL increasing the salary cap to $113.5M within three years, which is already an exciting amount of space compared to this year's cap of $88M.
NHL insider Chris Johnston is now reporting it could be even better, rising to over $118M within three years.
This will be great news for any team looking to lock up their elite players, as they'll have plenty of room to do so. Even better, if players are signed to long-term contracts now, they'll age even better as the cap continues to climb.
The Oilers will be in a great position on that front, getting McDavid and Draisaitl's contracts done before the cap takes the major jump.
Not only that, but the NHL is also reportedly looking to close the playoff loophole with LTIR. Now that the Edmonton Oilers tried it, they're being investigated and the NHL is finally doing something about it - of course.
At the end of the day, these changes will be meaningful and positive moves for the NHL, and will make the salary cap less of a dominating influence in hockey. Next will be addressing the advantages of teams with no state taxes.
