During today's game between the Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings, Canucks defenceman Nikita Zadorov received a major penalty and an ejection for a brutal looking hit to the head of young Red Wings star Lucas Raymond. Already, the NHL Department of Player Safety has decided to suspend Zadorov for two games.
Halfway through the second period, Zadorov lined up Raymond for a huge open ice hit, but clearly made way too much contact with Raymond's head.
In reality, Zadorov made initial contact with his shoulder driving into the chest of Raymond, but on his follow through, his head was the part that made direct contact with Raymond's head. Still, it's this type of explosive Center ice head contact that the NHL needs to eliminate from the league. The decision to suspend Zadorov two games is the right call.
