According to reports from multiple insiders, the Oilers explored trading Kane at the deadline, and will do so again this offseason. The goal is to clear his $5.125M of cap space to use elsewhere.
Edmonton Oilers may not receive much in return for Evander Kane trade
The Dallas Stars only received a 3rd and 4th round draft pick for Marchment, and the Oilers should receive something very similar - or a little less.
Evander Kane has averaged 6 more points over the last 3 seasons than Marchment, and comes with more playoff pedigree and a physical presence. However, his contract is more expensive at $5.125M, and a modified no-trade list will also restrict the amount of teams he can go to, which drives down the price.
Also considering Kane's injury history, NHL analyst Jonathan Willis of the Athletic believes the Oilers will receive less than the Marchment trade in return for Kane.
It may be a little disappointing to see Kane go for so little this offseason, but if the Oilers can offload his entire salary without retention, they'll have achieved their goal.
Next season, the Oilers will have a clear goal of getting younger, more positive value contracts, and getting back to win the Cup Final. Kane's an older player who became a drag in the Cup Final, and just doesn't fit their roster anymore.
