Former Oilers forward placed on waivers after only 2 games with new team
Former Oilers forward Noah Philp has been placed on waivers after only 2 games with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Oilers placed Philp on waivers back on December 28th, and the Hurricanes placed a claim to take him. The 27-year old centreman was in-demand around the league, but never exceeded a depth role.
Noah Philp placed on waivers, Oilers have opportunity to claim him back
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported this morning that the Hurricanes are placing Philp back on the waiver wire.
It’s a puzzle as to why the Hurricanes placed a claim on Philp and never gave him a true opportunity on their roster. He played just two games with Carolina on January 4th and 6th, and has been a healthy scratch since. In his two games, he only earned 10 minutes and 7 minutes of ice time respectively.
Philp broke into the NHL after the Oilers signed him as an undrafted free agent from the University of Alberta. A right shot centreman with size and defensive acumen, there was hope he could become a real contributor to the Oilers on the 4th line.
Instead, it seems like Philp’s problems in Edmonton were exposed even more with Carolina. For a 6’3 player depth player, he rarely utilizes his size with physicality. He’s been able to score fine in the AHL, but the production has never translated at the NHL level. Perhaps most crucially, Philp’s skating and speed aren’t strengths.
The Oilers do have this chance to take Philp back on their roster for free, but Edmonton placing a claim on him seems very unlikely. With the addition of Josh Samanski and the emergence of Curtis Lazar as their 4C, there’s just no fit for Philp anymore.
Still, Oilers fans will be hoping the best for the Canmore-native to find another home in the NHL, and continue his career.
