Edmonton Oilers make NHL history in win over Anaheim Ducks

In the Oilers' last game on Saturday against the Washington Capitals, Evan Bouchard was the big story as he scored a hat trick and registered 6 points. Tonight against Anaheim, his defence partner wanted in on the action.

Mattias Ekholm sealed the win tonight against Anaheim with an empty net goal for his third on the night, and hats rained down from Oil Country ready to celebrate the hat trick from an unlikely player. Together with Bouchard's last game though, the Oilers accomplished something never seen before in the NHL.

Amazingly, this was the first time in NHL history that a team has seen two different defenceman score a hat trick in back to back games.

It was incredible to see Ekholm finish off the hat trick, and see his teammates reaction to the veteran's accomplishment. Evan Bouchard was beaming with a smile, more happy for Ekholm's hat trick than he was for his own.

The 35 year old Swedish defender has been a key fixture of the Oilers blue line for years, and together with Bouchard forms one of the most dominant and balanced pairings in the entire NHL. Yet, he's never scored more than 11 goals in one season. Tonight was a magical night for him.

Not only did Ekholm notch a hat-trick right after Bouchard's 6-point game, the Oilers made NHL history in another category tonight as well.

According to NHL Public Relations, the Oilers goals tonight from Ekholm, Nurse, and Stastney were the fastest 4 goals from any defenceman in league history.

It's an incredible night for the Oilers blue line, one that none of them will ever forget - especially Ekholm.
