According to Sportsnet's Eric Francis, the Calgary Flames will begin construction on a new arena next week, with a target to open in the 2027-28 season.
While the Saddledome is an iconic building for Calgarians, it's time the Flames updated their facilities to a world-class arena - and that's what the plans sound like. The new 18,000 seat Event Centre in Calgary will feature multiple community spaces within the grounds as well.
These developments are great for the Flames franchise, and even for the city of Calgary. The Saddledome was the second oldest arena in NHL by ten years, only behind Madison Square Garden. It's great to see this update, and hopefully the Flames can usher in a new era of playoff hockey as their arena opens.
