Before the trade deadline, the Oilers reportedly made a serious effort to acquire winger Timo Meier, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. It would be difficult to see how Meier and his $10MM qualifying offer would fit into Edmonton's pay scale, but according to Friedman, their objective was likely to just evaluate the cap issues during the summer.
If it had occurred, Meier may have found himself back on the market this summer since Edmonton was practically treating him like a rental player. Meier, of course, finally chose to join the New Jersey Devils, and he has scored once in three games with his new squad.
