Among the groups under scrutiny are the NHL rookies, who are striving to impress their future bosses and secure a spot beyond the training camp.
One player determined to make a strong case is Oilers prospect forward Beau Akey. Akey, an 18-year-old, currently plays for the Barrie Colts in the OHL. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 174 pounds, this defenceman from Waterloo, Ontario, showcased his skills today when the Oilers rookies faced off against the Jets rookies in the Young Stars game.
Selected in the second round of the 2023 entry draft, 56th overall, Akey has earned praise for his precise and powerful footwork. He possesses the ability to pin opponents in the offensive zone before they can break out for the puck, as noted on eliteprospects.com.
While Akey will do his best to make a compelling case to remain with the Oilers, it is expected that he will return to the Colts for another season of OHL hockey.
During the 2022-2023 season, he played in 66 games, tallying eleven goals and 36 assists for a total of 47 points, along with 39 penalty minutes.
