Emily Cave, the widow of former Edmonton Oiler Colby Cave, has released a statement alleging the team has failed to support the Colby's Kids charity.
This story dates to April 11th, 2020, when the 25-year-old Cave's headaches led to a diagnosis of a brain bleed, and then passed away on April 11th. It was a shocking tragedy that deeply struck the Oilers, and truly awful for Emily and their children.
Issues cropped up surrounding Oilers' Memorial Fund for Colby Cave
In Emily Cave's detailed tweet, she explains how red flags were appearing around the Colby's Kids Memorial Fund set up by the Oilers in Cave's honor. Emily said that the team was capitalizing off her tragedy, telling her that tears make money, then let go of the effort entirely.
She revealed that major decisions were done without her permission, well over $1,000,000 worth of donation money had gone missing, and how the team felt that her dating after his passing was undesirable.
It appears that there was a pressure or expectation that she had to maintain a certain image to help grow the fund and help grow the money which did not show respect towards the legacy of Colby Cave and the efforts of Emily.
Emily says she's speaking out now in an attempt to draw attention back to the Colby's Kids charity efforts and continue the legacy of the Father to her children. Earlier this year, Emily visited a memorial to Colby with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.
Cave's career in the NHL was short but had much admiration by teammates
Cave was an undrafted player who was chosen by the Boston Bruins where he spent the bulk of his time playing for their American Hockey League theme Providence.
He remained with the Bruins organization from 2014 through 2019 and then was chosen on waivers by the Oilers where he played 44 games, scoring three goals with one assist for four points and was a + 12.
Despite his NHL career being brief, he held much respect and admiration amongst his teammates.
His situation was an unfortunate turn of events, and his widow Emily still has much support amongst the fan base despite all the controversy surrounding her late husband's death and memorial fund.
