The Edmonton Oilers lost fan favourite defenceman Vincent Desharnais to the Vancouver Canucks in free agency, and he recently spoke about the change to a rival team.
Desharnais had nothing but positive things to say about his time with the Edmonton Oilers, and noted that it would be strange to play them so many times a season on a rival team like Vancouver. Then, he joked that at least he didn't sign with the Calgary Flames.
I said it during the season, I said it after the season that I want to stay in Edmonton. I've been a part of the Oilers for eight years, I've been bleeding orange, it's been Oilers ever since I got drafted.
But it's also a business . . . Obviously you think about it, like well, if I go with the Canucks I will be playing them quite a bit. Then after you think about it, you're like well, it could have been worse. It could have been Calgary.

Desharnais clearly has a special place for the Oilers in his heart, and it's tough to hear him say he never wanted to leave the team - and it being especially tough to join a division rival. In the same interview, Desharnais also spoke highly of the support he received from Oilers fans online after leaving the team, denying that fans can be overly critical at times.
The Oilers saw Desharnais come up in the organization after being a long shot to ever make the NHL as a seventh round pick, and the towering defenceman became a fan favourite in Edmonton. Many will still be wishing him the best in the next chapter of his career.
