The Edmonton Oilers have wrapped up their rookie series against the Calgary Flames, and top prospect Ike Howard failed to really stand out.

The Oilers acquired Howard in an offseason trade with the hope he could be fast-tracked to the NHL this year. It's still early in meaningless games, but Howard's early performance hasn't looked NHL ready.

Ike Howard disappoints Oilers fans at rookie series vs Calgary Flames

Nobody's looking at box scores for these types of games, but how prospects perform and the skills they display against a lesser quality of competition. Howard had flashes, but failed to stand out the level an NHL ready player would have.
Oilers fans began to relay their worries that Howard may not be ready to join Edmonton this year.
While Howard may not have had a good showing in the rookie series, there shouldn't be any panic from the Oilers. These games are close to scrimmage level preseason hockey. Howard will have more time at Oilers camp and preseason games to make his case for the NHL roster.
There is a chance that the 21 year old Howard begins the season in the AHL as he makes the transition from College to pro hockey. There's still plenty of time for him to develop, adjust to pro hockey, and turn into a great player for the Oilers.
On the other hand, the Oilers' other top prospect Matthew Savoie did dominate both games in the rookie tournament, and looks primed to jump to the NHL.
After a full season with the Condors last year, Savoie's defensive game took a leap forward and he was able to maintain his offensive production. He's looking like a complete player ready to help the Oilers win.
The Edmonton Oilers have a much better prospect system this season than they did even a year ago, largely thanks to signings and trades from GM Stan Bowman. Savoie looks like a sure hit for the NHL, and a few more could be on the way to help Edmonton on cheap deals.
