The Edmonton Oilers are expected to be beginning contract extensions with new defender Jake Walman, and may go all the way to an 8 year contract.
This is the final year NHL players will be eligible to sign an 8 year contract, and the Oilers have already used it as a strategy to keep Trent Frederic's salary lower. Now, they could also use it with Jake Walman.
Edmonton Oilers likely to sign Jake Walman to contract extension, may use 8 year term
There's a chance that Stan Bowman ends up signing Jake Walman to an eight-year deal. That could end up happening.
This is something that the Oilers can do that nobody else can do... we have shorter terms coming to the next CBA, which takes place next summer.

Walman was a fanatic fit with the Edmonton Oilers last season, and came in a bargain deal at only $3.4M. He brought a strong two-way game that stabilized the Oilers blue line in the playoffs, and could provide a solid partner for Darnell Nurse.
According to Evolving Hockey, Walman would be worth $6.278M over a six year contract term. If the Oilers extended the contract to 8 years, they could sign Walman to the same total with only a $4.7M cap hit.
The cap savings each year would be incredible meaningful for the Oilers, but there's a good chance that contract could age terribly in the last 3 years.
Locking up Walman this offseason is a good idea, and the Oilers have a few options as to how they can get it done. At the very least, signing Walman provides meaningful insurance in the top 4 as Mattias Ekholm also ages into his final NHL seasons.
