Top NHL insider shares questionable take on McDavid's future after contract with Oilers

McDavid gave the Oilers an astounding salary discount at only $12.5M per season, but only signed for 2 years. That does put some pressure on the Oilers to win with McDavid's discount, but some NHL insiders have more ridiculous ideas of his departure.

NHL Chris Johnston shared in a new report in the Athletic that he views McDavid's 2 year term as an «escape hatch» - and the Oilers could even look to trade him in the final year of the contract.

After McDavid just re-signed for 2 more years at an unprecedented discount, it doesn't look like he's looking for an escape hatch. He may be more committed to winning with his team than any other player in hockey.

And of course, McDavid wouldn't sign that contract if he didn't fully believe they can accomplish the goal of a Stanley Cup.

Oilers GM Stan Bowman has made some shrewd moves to add young talent at little cost, and is signing much better value contracts than his predecessor Ken Holland. These quality moves by Bowman should give McDavid faith in the future of the team, too.

With all the evidence that McDavid is ultra-committed to winning in Edmonton, Johnston's take was eviscerated by a many Oilers fans, and hockey fans at large.

Oilers fans should be feeling confident now that the Captain himself has shown his belief in the team with his historic contract. McDavid isn't looking at an escape hatch at all, he's incredibly locked in to delivering Edmonton a cup.
