The Oilers are heading back the Stanley Cup Final this week, and with the end of the season in sight, attention is drifting toward a critical juncture for the team - Connor McDavid's contract.

McDavid will be eligible to re-sign with the Edmonton Oilers on July 1st of this year, before entering the final year of his contract. At the end of his current deal, he could become an unrestricted free agent.

Oilers president Jeff Jackson addresses Connor McDavid contract status

Speaking in a new interview with NHL.com's Derek Van Diest, Oilers president Jeff Jackson revealed that no work has been done on the contract yet - but it will be the number one priority for the organization.
We're not into it yet, but I think once the season's over, if it goes any way, the way it did last year, now they we were fortunate to make it to the Final, then all of a sudden you're into the end of June, you're into the draft, you're into free agency. But yes, priority No. 1 would be to talk to Connor and his agents. And ya, it's on everybody's radar for sure. But we're just leaving it for the time being as long as we're still playing. After that, ya.

- Jeff Jackson

It's surprising to hear that they almost haven't even begun discussions at all, but it could also speak to their confidence level in getting McDavid locked up for another 8 years.
Jeff Jackson was actually Connor McDavid's very first agent going back to when he was only 15 years old. Jackson then represented McDavid all through his NHL career, only passing it off to become President of the Oilers. To say they have a close personal relationship is an understatement.
Along with McDavid's long relationship with upper management, there's just no other reason he would leave Edmonton. He's establishing his young family here, playing with his best friend Leon Draisaitl, and are perennially competing for the Stanley Cup. The grass isn't greener anywhere else.
Jackson seems supremely confident McDavid will be signed, and Oilers fans were already feeling that way. There looks to be no doubt that McDavid will be an Edmonton Oiler for life.
