Previous reports on the rising NHL salary cap indicate that other teams may actually spend less, and with Katz and the Oilers earning more, they'll be financially stronger than many other teams.
According to Grizzly Bulls, Latz was valued at $4.1B last year and is now valued at $5.8B this year.
That increase is probably closely tied to the Edmonton Oilers skyrocketing in their franchise value, now ranked the 6th most valuable NHL team, majorly up from last year.
Since Katz purchased the Oilers in 2007, he has fully realized the vision for transforming Edmonton into a destination city for the entire NHL.
The construction of Rogers Place, the surrounding district, the first class facilities, and then stacking the team with elite talent while retaining them - has contributed to the sustainable winning environment.
According to the Edmonton Journal, NHL insider Frank Seravalli recalled Oilers players having a close relationship with Katz and actually hugging after they clinched their first Stanley Cup berth.
There is something to be said for the work Katz has put in to turn the Oilers into a world class organization, and taking them out of the decade of darkness.
Not all moves will ever be popular as the team owner looks to make more money, like jersey ads and price increases. However, if the fans are repaid with watching Connor McDavid win a Stanley Cup, it'll be a major success for all of Edmonton.
