One of the most instrumental additions to the coaching staff has been Oilers franchise legend Paul Coffey as the team's defence coach. Coffey is now 63 years old and had no prior professional coaching experience which led to some speculation that he may step aside after just the one year. It seems like he wants to finish the job, because Coach Knoblauch has now confirmed Coffey will be returning.
It had previously been reported that Coffey will be returning, but confirmation from Knoblauch is as official as it gets. Fans will be thrilled to have Coffey back behind the bench.
Coffey played seven season with the Oilers to begin his career as an elite offensive defenceman. He's clearly been able to translate his talent and understanding of the game to make a real impact as a coach. Coffey has told reporters that he always stresses the defencemen to make plays for their talented forwards, and it has resulted in some of the complete hockey the Oilers have played in the McDavid era.
Everyone is improving, but specifically Evan Bouchard is thriving under Paul Coffey. Now, he just has to guide this group to their first Stanley Cup, and Coffey's work will be done.
