After not recording a shot for the first time in a playoff game, McDavid looked like he was shot out of a cannon last night. Reunited with Leon Draisaitl on the first line in some last minute playoff mind games, McDavid scored a critical trying goal and three assists to lead the team to victory. His line was clearly the Oilers' reason for winning last night, and one reporter asked McDavid point blank if he thought he was carrying the team.
It's honestly an awful question from the reporter to diminish the efforts of the entire Oilers team, and McDavid rightly shot the question down, emphasizing the contributions from every player on the team.
McDavid was far and away the best player on the ice last night, but that's not a new occurrence. Everyone in hockey knew McDavid was going to come out with his best game after the blown lead in game one, and he did just that. He isn't carrying the team on his back, but leading the entire team into the fight. It wasn't McDavid that scored the overtime winner anyway, it was another emerging superstar in Evan Bouchard.
When McDavid turns it on to play a completely dominant game like he did last night, it can look like he's carrying the Oilers by himself - but these efforts always inspire more contributions from the rest of the roster. Last night was a prime example of McDavid leading by example to bring the Oilers a much needed win.
