Former Oilers Captain Jason Smith accepts Head coach job for Edmonton Oil Kings

This morning, the Oil Kings officially introduced Smith as their head coach.
Smith actually began his coaching career as an assistant with the Senators in 2014. He was also the head coach of the Kelowna Rockets, and most recently an assistant to the Flyers AHL team.
Perhaps he could be working his resume to get back to the NHL - or he may just be happy to be back in his home province of Alberta.

Oilers fans remember former captain Jason Smith as he takes new coaching job

Smith was a defensive defenceman who only had a career high of 20 points in a season, but he was a beloved player and leader for the Edmonton Oilers.
Affectionately known by the nickname Gator, Smith served as the Oilers captain from 2001 to 2007, leading the team through their Stanley Cup Final run in 2006.
Smith's time with the Oilers came to an end when he was traded along with Joffrey Lupul to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Geoff Sanderson and Joni Pitkanen.
His tough style of play, NHL experience, and leadership will be great assets in a coach for the Oil Kings. Fans will be able to see Smith back in Rogers Place behind the bench this upcoming season, and he'll get a great welcome back.
