Reports surfaced earlier this season the Canucks were quickly feeling buyers remorse with Desharnais, and were exploring trades to dump his contract.
When speaking to the media today, Tocchet didn't deny any trade rumours, but also commended Desharnais' play lately and his conduct amongst rumours of a move.
Tocchet went on to commend Desharnais for a multitude of changes he's made to his game as of late, which earned him a major bump in ice time last night to 22:19 - including overtime minutes.
Tocchet praising Desharnais this much could possibly be pumping his value in trade, but the Canucks also need the help on their blueline at the moment.
Both Quinn Hughes and Filip Hronek, their top two defenceman, are currently out with injury. Even if it's just for a while, the Canucks may be putting a hold on trading Desharnais to keep him on the roster for depth.
Closer to the trade deadline though, it's likely the Canucks would explore the trade market for Desharnais again. The Canucks signed the 27 year old defender with only 114 NHL games to a two year contract worth $4M, and his physical game struggles to justify that value.
Desharnais is a great personality and became a fan favourite in Edmonton for his toughness, but he does struggle to move the puck. For league minimum he's a fine player, but at $2M, it's a stretch for the Canucks.
They could better allocate Desharnais' salary at the trade deadline, but for the moment, he's needed in Vancouver. Hopefully he can prove his worth to other NHL teams to secure another opportunity elsewhere.
