The Oilers have spent the whole offseason hoping that their two RFAs Holloway and Broberg wouldn't get offer sheeted by another team. Their worst nightmares have come true, with the same unexpected team offer sheeting both of their young talents.
The St. Louis Blues have sent offer sheets to both of Edmonton's RFAs. The Blues weren't a team that was on the offer sheet radar for either player and especially not both. Both Oilers players have officially signed the contracts with the Blues, and now the Oilers have 7 days to take action.
This is disastrous for the Oilers, as they wanted to use negotiation time to try and get team-friendly deals with both players. The value for each contract is relatively low, done purposely by Blues GM Doug Armstrong. The Oilers will only receive a third round pick for Holloway, and a second round pick for Broberg.
Broberg accepted a 2 year $4.5M deal and Holloway was given 2 years at $2.2M. The Oilers are most likely not going to be able to retain both and have only 7 days to create money to choose who to keep. This is a terrible situation for new GM Stan Bowman, who seemingly wanted to wait this situation out as much as possible.
