The Edmonton Oilers will see Mattias Janmark return for their next game, which will force the team to send one player to the AHL.
The Oilers are currently at the maximum roster capacity of 23 with Janmark still on IR. For him to be activated to play tomorrow's game, one player must come off the NHL roster.
Edmonton Oilers reveal 3 key injury updates, will imminently send player down to AHL
According to reporters at Oilers practice today, Coach Knoblauch confirmed that Janmark is likely to return to the lineup for tomorrow's game against Columbus.
Oilers likely to demote waiver-exempt forward to AHL for Janmark's return
If the Oilers were going to place a player on waivers to clear a spot for Janmark, they would've had to make the roster transaction today.
Because they didn't make any roster move yet, it must be a waiver exempt player moving down to the AHL. The Oilers' options would be Ike Howard,
David Tomasek, or Matt Savoie.
The most likely option to be sent down is Ike Howard, the rookie forward who's been barely played by Coach Knoblauch. Wasting away on the 4th line, this is no longer the best place for his development - but it's questionable whether Knoblauch gave him a fair shot.
It's also possible that David Tomasek is the player moved. He's more of a complete player than Howard at the moment, but an older player with less of a future on the team.
Either way, whatever move the Oilers make won't be the shakeup needed after a shocking 9-1 loss to Colorado. This roster is looking nowhere near good enough at the moment, and some more changes may be needed than just sending down a rookie.
It's not like Janmark is going to help the Oilers 5v5 offence struggles, anyway.
