The Edmonton Oilers have one of the deepest defence groups in the NHL with their current group, but they could make a major addition this offseason with Aaron Ekblad.
The 29 year old first overall pick of the Florida Panthers has been a staple on their blueline since 2014, but new reports suggest a stalemate of contract talks will lead Ekblad to free agency this summer.
Panthers defenceman Aaron Ekblad reportedly likely to test free agency, Oilers listed as potential destination
According to a new update from NHL insider David Pagnotta, Ekblad is seeking at least $7.5M or more on his next deal, and the Panthers are unwilling to go above the $6M range.
In addition, Pagnotta named the Edmonton Oilers, Detroit Red Wings, and Toronto Maple Leafs are the primary suitors to sign Ekblad if he hits free agency.
Should the Edmonton Oilers be in on signing Aaron Ekblad?
Aaron Ekblad has put together a solid career with the Panthers, playing 732 career games with 380 points, and becoming a very reliable two-way defender.
He's been a great asset for the Panthers while they've contended and in this year's playoffs, but he's also been commonly walked by his old friend in
Connor McDavid more than a few times.
On the whole, Ekblad's had a great playoffs with 12 points in 17 games, but he just may not fit with Edmonton.
The Oilers will need to commit near $10M to sign
Evan Bouchard this offseason, and already have Ekholm, Walman, Nurse, and Stecher signed for next season. Adding Ekblad would require the Oilers to move off another veteran player.
