Oilers forward Noah Philp gets claimed on waivers, decision revealed on another former Oiler
The Edmonton Oilers placed forward Noah Philp on waivers yesterday, and have learned today that he's been claimed by the Carolina Hurricanes.
The 27-year old Philp was signed to the Oilers as an undrafted free agent from the University of Alberta, and the team had high hopes for him developing into a quality 4th line center.
Unfortunately, his recent injury and veteran forwards have blocked him from being a factor in the lineup, leading to the waivers decision.
Oilers' Noah Philp claimed by Carolina Hurricanes on waivers
The Canmore native Philp showed some real promise coming up in the Oilers' system as a defensively strong, right-shot centreman with impressive size. Even in the 15 games he played, those strengths just didn't come through.
While Philp did leave a lot to be desired in his time with the Oilers, there are still worse players in the bottom six. Philp has the same amount of goals and assists as Trent Frederic in half the amount of games, and he makes only $775K.
Other NHL teams have reportedly seen this promise in Philp, and would be interested in trading for him. If that's the case, then the Oilers placing him on waivers seems like a mistake.
In addition, former Oiler Ethan Bear was placed on waivers yesterday. He was a fan favourite for his personality and strong underlying numbers earlier in his career, but there's simply no room for the Oilers to add another blueliner. Fans will wish him the best in his next endeavour in the AHL.
The Oilers will likely be making more roster moves in the coming days as injured players return to the active roster, hopefully continuing their recent streak of great play.
