The Edmonton Oilers made a great trade today to acquire Connor Ingram, a goalie with potential to be their starter - and gave up nothing.
The Oilers only gave up future considerations in their trade to not only get Ingram, but also get him with $800K in retained salary.
It's fairly established that teams trading for a player with retained salary have to pay for those cap savings - so that's left Oilers fans wondering what «future considerations» means in this trade.
Oilers insiders clarify Edmonton will pay nothing to Utah for Connor Ingram
Insiders have now explained clearly that Edmonton will send nothing to Utah for Ingram, not now or in the future.
The Utah Mammoth are simply doing a major personal favour for Connor Ingram to find him a new opportunity to continue his career.
Even Utah insiders have stressed that the club directly the trade knowing it wasn't a good deal for them - but did it to help Ingram land in a good new environment.
The 28 year old goaltender has shown real promise at the NHL level, posting a .907 save percentage in 50 games 2 years ago. However, last year his numbers began to dip with personal struggles.
Ingram lost his mother during the 2024 season, and later entered the NHL Player Assistance Program for mental health reasons. He clearly had a tough time, and would benefit from a fresh start. Utah did the right by Ingram by allowing him that opportunity after clearing waivers.
With the Oilers, Ingram already has one connection that may make him feel closer to home. The new goalie grew up in Kris Knobaluch's hometown of Imperial, Saskatchewan. With a population of under 500, the two likely know each other.
If Ingram can get back to the level he's played previously in the NHL, he'll be a great addition to the Oilers and have the potential to challenge for the starter's net entirely.
After he gets back up to speed with the AHL for a stretch, Oilers fans will be thrilled to see Ingram make his debut with Edmonton.
