Controversial former Oilers executive re-hired by GM Ken Holland with Los Angeles Kings
Now led GM Ken Holland, the Los Angeles Kings have officially hired Tyler Wright, the Oilers' former Head of Amateur Scouting.
Ken Holland was brought on as the Kings General Manager this summer, and has already added a few former Oilers with Corey Perry and Cody Ceci. Tyler Wright worked closely under Holland in Edmonton, and now it'll continue in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Kings hire unpopular former head of Oilers' scouting Tyler Wright
The hiring of Wright has been confirmed by a new report from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal.
Wright joined the Edmonton Oilers with Ken Holland in 2019, and led the Oilers draft selection strategy until mutually parting ways with the organization in after the 2022-2023 season.
Frankly, Oilers fans rightfully aren't too happy with Wright's results running amateur scouting. Since 2019, Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway are the only Oilers draft picks to make the NHL consistently - and even with those picks, there were better options on the board.
The Oilers also made some questionable draft-day trades in Wright's history as head scout, including trading down to take failed first rounder Xavier Bourgault.
In reality, Wright's history as a scout even extends back to his time in Detroit. With the Red Wings under his tenure, Filip Hronek was the only player of consequence drafted.
Oilers fans may have a little chuckle seeing their divisional rival lock up Wright, and can rightfully expect their prospect pool to be fairly weak in a few years. Thankfully, the Oilers seem to be in a better position with their current scouting staff.
