Connor McDavid makes shocking statement on his future with Edmonton Oilers

According to more recent reports from NHL insider Bob Stauffer, Connor McDavid may also be considering a shorter term contract like Auston Matthews' has, but there's still a 99% chance he re-signs in Edmonton.

When speaking to the media for locker room cleaning day, Connor McDavid made rare statements on his contract situation. McDavid said his biggest priorities are winning and taking care of his family, and he's in no rush to sign a new deal.

To hear McDavid not directly commit to re-signing in Edmonton, along with reports of a shorter term contract, is a little anxiety-inducing for Oilers fans.

Even more bluntly, McDavid said that he'll take a few weeks to evaluate the direction of the team under new management of GM Stan Bowman. Only if he believes the Oilers can keep contending, then re-signing will be no problem.

Another cause for concern would be McDavid's impassioned comments after losing the Cup Final- saying the team kept on doing the same things over and over again. There was a deep sense of frustration and anger over the loss that still carried into McDavid's presser today.

In the next few weeks, the Oilers will need to show McDavid that they have a long-term plan to keep contending for a Stanley Cup. Solidifying the goaltending, adding quality new wingers, and signing Bouchard would be a great start.

While these are some factors that may give Oilers fans some panic, McDavid has shown no desire ever to leave Edmonton. This is a team that's now made the Cup Final two years in a row - close to winning - and has his family putting down roots with his wife Lauren Kyle. Edmonton is still the best team for McDavid.

Nevertheless, until McDavid gets a deal done, the national hockey media will be pitting a microscope on the best player in the world a year away from free agency. Hopefully the Oilers can get a deal done early just to quiet the noise.
