Where will Oilers spend opened cap space after contract termination?

Tomasek has officially been placed on waivers for the purpose of mutual contract termination. That means if he gets claimed or not, Edmonton will clear his entire $1.2M salary.

As the Oilers currently have Jake Walman and Kasperi Kapanen on LTIR, they needed to clear some salary cap space to make room for returning players. Realistically, Tomasek is just the first casualty.

The Oilers currently have just $612K of salary cap space and have $4.7M of players on LTIR according to PuckPedia. Clearing Tomasek will bring them to $1.812M in cap space, but they still need more to activate Walman and Kapanen.

Beyond that, sending down Riley Stillman and Calvin Pickard seem like the most obvious options to clear salary space. After those moves, they'll still may need to clear a bit more cap space with another move - likely a tough cut on their 4th line of Max Jones, who's been playing well.

Players like Connor Clattenburg and Noah Philp currently don't contribute to the Oilers roster as they're currently on LTIR.

There's also the option to clear $1.45M of cap by clearing out Mattias Janmark. While he's been solid defensively as always, he just hasn't brought any offence in the last two years. If the Oilers want to add any more in trade, they'll need to explore some of these options to clear more cap space.

Perhaps the Oilers have something else in mind with their roster re-jig, but Tomasek looks to be first in a line of necessary roster cuts for when the team gets back to full strength.
