Edmonton Oilers goalie prospect Samuel Jonsson has recently shot up prospect rankings, and now has an opening to officially join the organization in the AHL.

Earlier this week, Oilers goalie prospect Olivier Rodrigue left the organization to sign in the KHL - which means there's a significant opening for starting opportunities with the Bakersfield Condors.

Samuel Jonsson ranked as 3rd best Oilers prospect, will have chance to start for AHL Bakersfield Condors

The Oilers are in dire need of a long-term goaltender, and haven't had a top end young prospect for a while. That's changing now, with analysts at OilersNation ranking Jonsson as the organization's 3rd best prospect.
Jonsson's now also been signed to an entry level contract, and is expected to come to North America to compete for a job in the ECHL or AHL. The departure of Rodrigue has left an opening for him in the AHL.
The Oilers signed Jonsson to a three-year entry-level contract in April, making him one of six goaltenders under contract for 2025-26. With no indication of a European Assignment Clause in the deal, it appears he'll head to North America to continue his development in either the AHL or ECHL.

Standing at 6'5, the 21 year old Jonsson wasn't a highly touted prospect when the Oilers selected him in the 5th round of the 2022 Draft.
In the 2024-25 season, Jonsson took a major leap forward with BIK Karlskoga in Sweden's second tier pro league. In 24 games, Jonsson posted an incredible .922 save percentage with 6 shutouts, and earned himself the league's best goalie award.
With his size and athleticism, Jonsson fits the profile of the most successful modern day NHL goalies, and is beginning to emerge as a steal from the late rounds of the draft.
If he can follow up last year's success with a good year in North America, he could be on the radar to join the Oilers in a few years.
