After more controversy has risen around the Oilers' goaltending situation, top NHL insiders are still confident that no trade will be coming for an upgrade.
Even the most ardent defenders of the Oilers goaltending have begun to shift their tune in recent weeks, as it seems the team has lost trust in their tandem. The Oilers can't afford to enter another playoffs with weak goaltending, but here they are again.
Top NHL insiders says Oilers are unlikely to make trade for a goalie
According to a new update from NHL insider David Pagnotta, the Oilers simply don't have the salary cap space to make a deal for an upgrade. Not only that, but their options on the market are limited.
This echoes a recent report from Oilers insider Bob Stauffer as well, who said the team is currently locked-in to their tandem and still believe that Skinner can rise to the occasion when needed.
They hired a new goaltending coach, I think they've got to see this through. That's what I'd say today. He's at an .889 save percentage, league average is below .900 this year. It's got to come up a bit.

Pundits can say the Oilers are Lin it Ed in cap space and trade options all they want, but that doesn't change Stan Bowman's responsibility to upgrade the position if needed by the playoffs.
The Oilers can create a significant amount of cap space for a trade by moving out veterans with no trade protection. They could clear even more space by trading Skinner too.
As for options on the market, that's where the GM needs to do his job. Some teams will surely be moving goaltenders through the season, and the Oilers need to be listening and pressuring on all those calls.
The team might need to get creative. A proven playoff option would be preferable, but even a younger goalie with upside could fit the team's needs too. Their scouting department could earn their paycheck here.
Unless Skinner goes on a run until the playoffs posting over a .900 save percentage consistently, Edmonton will absolutely need an upgrade in net - regardless of what the insiders say.
