With the injury to newly-acquired goalie Tristan Jarry last night in Boston, the Oilers may have no choice but to pull the trigger on another trade for yet another netminder.
Oilers could re-visit with Sabres for trade negotiations
Reports out of Buffalo have been coming fast and furious, with their new GM Kekelainen attempting to deal one of the team's three NHL-ready goaltenders.
For Stan Bowman and the Oilers, it's no longer a question of just improving the goalie situation, but of having two healthy and capable ones.
The most likely option of the three goalies, according to Elliotte Friedman, is Alex Lyon. He has the best numbers. Over 16 starts, he's posted a record of 7-6-3, with a .905 SV% and a 2.99 GAA.
For a trade to realize, however, Edmonton would require clearing some cap space, whether by trade, demotion, or some other creative way that GM's utilize.
«Mattias Janmark would have some trade protection - maybe David Tomášek or Kasperi Kapanen,» said Marek said on Oilersnation Everyday. «If you want to trade for him, you can make the money work. The question is whether you want to let go of any of those players.»
That is the question for Bowman. Kapanen is on the IR and would require time the Oilers don't have.
David Tomasek is the likely candidate to move. He's been ineffective this season and is playing just over 8 minutes of TOI in a bottom-6 role.
Of course, the Oilers' GM would need to move on from Calvin Pickard, whether in trade, or a demotion to the minors. Between the two, the team can clear $2.2M from the salary cap.
